In this overview of pottery making techniques for beginners you will learn about key handbuilding techniques and how to use a potter’s wheel (throwing). At the end of the course you will be able to identify and select appropriate techniques and processes to make functional and / or sculptural pottery. Content is split equally between throwing and handbuilding with a dedicated tutor to guide you through each discipline.

PLEASE NOTE: Your pots will be fired to stoneware and glazed with a glossy clear glaze. Your pieces will be ready for you to collect 4-6 weeks later. Please select 6 week or 12 week courses for the option to glaze your own work.

Content:

Basic handbuilding techniques: coil building and slab building. Throwing: wheel control, posture, centering, coning, opening up, compressing walls and rims, using ribs, wiring-off, using chucks, wipe down. Good practice: managing workspaces and resources to avoid common technical problems. 

Prerequisites: none

Duration: 12 hours over 2 days with up to 60 minutes for lunch.

Includes: non-refundable booking fee (2.5% of ticket value), all materials, and up to 8kg of fired work (unfired weight). We provide you with clean aprons and all tools and equipment.
