Our Team: Introducing Theo Goss

Meet Theo Goss. By day Theo plays drums, by night he pulls a mean handle! I mean look… This is the first time he’s had a go. We’re all (not so) secretly envious!

Theo joined Sunken Studio in April 2021, we recruited him through The Department of Work and Pensions’ Kickstart Scheme. The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create jobs for 16 to 24 year olds. & oh wow, the placements (two so far) have provided the whole team with much needed breathing space.

Theo draws on his experience as a musician, comfortably working creatively and collaboratively towards common goals. We underpin many of our activities at the studio with a sound understanding of materials, techniques and processes. Theo recognises that pottery making and music have shared concerns: “music is as much about consistency and following direction, as it is creativity and passion”. It’s reassuring to know that every member of the team understands the importance of solid foundations in helping realise ideas.

Over the last couple of months Theo has sanded and packed our order for House of Fu, pugged and packed all of your TubeClay for Pull Together, dismantled and reassembled specialist kit, learnt how to throw, pulled, extruded and attached handles, assisted in classes, glazed pots and test tiles, run glaze tests, and countersunk a lot of holes... and a lot of stuff I’ve forgotten about already. Most importantly... he’s learnt about clay and has an acute bodily, spatial and sensory awareness that transfers from drum sticks to handling clay.

Music is as much about consistency and following direction as it is creativity and passion

You’ll typically meet Theo at the studio weekday afternoons and evenings... and about town playing drums.

When asked if you were an object, what would you be and why?

A mug: constantly topped-up with coffee. To be alert all the time.
