Diversity in a shared studio space

There’s something about making that brings people together. To showcase that, we’ve recently begun commissioning a series of short films to give a glimpse into life at Sunken Studio and the experiences of our makers. Though every person is unique, there’s a common thread through the messages kindly shared: Sunken Studio is a place to bring diversities, stories and individuals together.

The place to foster new connections

There’s a powerful emphasis on inclusivity here at Sunken Studio. You may find you start conversations with people you’d not normally get a chance to meet in your day-to-day life. Perhaps you’ll be introduced to someone who has stories to share from a world you’ve yet to experience?

Our makers come not just from Leeds, but across the globe. Some of them joined us as they first found their feet in Yorkshire, like Melanie who’d relocated from Perth, Western Australia with her partner. Melanie wanted to try pottery for the first time. At Sunken Studio, she found a hobby she loved, a therapeutic outlet, and a place where she felt she belonged.

Bonded by materials and experiences

The influences we all take from our lives can consciously, and unconsciously, impact what we make – and why and how. That may be music, nature, or painters, as well as the people around us.

At the studio, we’re unified by conversations and companionship. Here, you can take inspiration from the making journey of others around you, perhaps from their stories, sources or materials.

No matter your background, we’d love you to find your third place here with us. At Sunken Studio, we’ve created a social surrounding built on the sense of belonging, where everyone’s welcome – and everyone feels at home.

Experience what it’s like to be a member in our latest video filmed at the heart of our pottery community. We’d love for you to join us.
