Commissions: Laynes Espresso
Oomph, tasty food off custom plates. Laynes Espresso now have a new stash of bespoke handmade plates. We made them!
We’ve been working with Laynes Espresso, in Leeds, to develop plates that are fine but informal, hearty, earthy, and textural. Each is thrown by hand, trimmed, and finessed on a Potter’s Wheel. The glaze, developed in-house, is an umptious glossy flecked white, flashing burnt umber on edges and where glaze application varies in thickness.
Laynes commissioned Sunken Studio to make a batch of 28cm flared dinner plates and 18cm side plates to compliment their luscious lunches, and the warm tones and tactile surfaces of the cafe. We were given a geometric concrete tile (that looked encaustic) to respond to. The tile defined the colour palette and, during early stages exploration, graphical brush work. Laynes settled on a simple design, choosing a warm clay body and calm expansive surfaces that celebrate subtleties - it was important to balance attention between the space, food and plate.
We work with designers, architects, and businesses to manufacture small batch ceramics and glazes, and to realise ceramic projects. All work is developed and custom made in our central Leeds studio.
