Members make: Neil’s pot

Every now and again Neil swings by with a whopper. In 2020 he’s been working from home and dropping off pieces and test tiles to fire at the studio. He makes big geometric pots with detailed surfaces. They are handbuilt using strips of clay and shaped using metal kidneys and rasps.

He has used paper resists to cover this pot in type. Paper stencils are used to create sharp and precise decoration. In this piece, a resist technique uses the contrast between a white clay body and black decorative slip to produce a bold graphical design. The surface has depth - removing the paper resists produces a tactile relief surface.

We have a range of membership packages available. Members are able to access the studio during local restrictions in all tiers.

All businesses and venues that are open are expected to follow COVID-19 secure guidelines to protect customers, visitors and workers. In all tiers, the following businesses and venues can remain open:

  • essential and non-essential retail, including indoor and outdoor markets and car boot sales

  • certain leisure and sporting facilities such as gyms, sports courts and facilities, leisure centres, fitness and dance studios, golf courses, swimming pools, riding centres, outdoor playgrounds – subject to relevant social contact rules in each tier. Indoor group activities and classes should not take place at tier 3

  • public buildings, such as libraries, community centres and halls. They should not host events for private hire, such as birthday parties or most other social activities in tier 3

The measures Sunken Studio have in place are:

  • we operate in a COVID-secure manner, including restrictions on group bookings.

  • we collect customer, visitor and staff data to support NHS Test and Trace.

  • the wearing of face coverings for customers and staff is mandatory.

  • people do not meet with people from outside of their household or support bubble.

  • you are advised not to travel into or out of an area if it has been categorised as a very high alert level area.
