Thimbles for Fairies

ceramic-thimble-commission-samantha-bryan

In September I was asked to make some colourful ceramic thimbles for the ‘Fairy Lady’ Samantha Bryan. Samantha is inspired by Victorian gadgetry and invention and creates humorous suspended, wall mounted and free standing sculptures out of a combination of wire, leather, found objects & collected materials. These unusual sculptures depict everyday life in ‘fairyland’. Samantha species of fairies are beautifully crafted and each tells an endearing story built around ideas on what they need, the perils they face and how busy they are. Listen to Samantha talk about being an inventor and story teller in her film ‘Desire to Fly’.

Ceramics Taster: Whittle

Spoons – measuring, eating, serving and stirring. Have you got a favourite? If not, come and make one.

Here at Sunken Studio we’re partial to making a tool or two and we love making spoons. It’s just a bowl with a handle but they are wonderfully tactile and sculptural. Make something by hand for the hand – there’s something reassuring and comforting about this modest utensil.

You’ll consider form and function and we’ll help you design and make a small but elegant clay spoon. It’ll rest gracefully when placed and do the job.

Prerequisites: none, designed for beginners or anyone wanting to refine existing skills.

Spoons

wip-bisque-spoons-june-july

For the last 2-3 weeks I’ve been whittling a spoon a day. I generally make more than one as I usually allow an hour to do it. Some get discarded quickly, others will get discarded but I’ll use them for glaze tests first. There are so many nuances to explore/develop. Over time I’ll work out the technique, size, form and colours that I’ll concentrate on. For now, I enjoy having something that I make daily. Continue reading Spoons

Paper

paper-thin-slip-cast-cup

Paper thin and too thin. I’ve been reclaiming some of the clay that’s used in workshops into a casting slip. I’m trying to develop complimentary practices to reduce the need for reclaiming clay on plaster bats, pugging and wedging. I’ll no doubt need to do this eventually but would like to circumvent this process while I need space for other things. Continue reading Paper
