Decorating Clay with Slips and Underglazes

Look at this bunch of cheery creatures. They were made by Katy in one of our pottery evening classes. The flat disks are test tiles exploring a range of decorative techniques using slips and underglazes. They were made in preparation for a main make – see below for details.

Ceramic Petri Dishes

If you love colour, you might like these. I’m currently working on three sizes of ceramic petri-style dishes for The Hepworth Wakefield Contemporary Ceramics Fair in May. Available in red, yellow, orange and blue and diameters 10cm, 15cm and 20cm (approximately). These images are of work in progress. The colours look neon – they’ll still be bright when finished but not this bright…

The Plant Room Garden Sessions: Carving Pattern with Plants in Mind

The Garden Sessions are creative workshops that celebrate plants, creativity and urban-growing.

We are really excited to be invited to lead an evening of plant studies and botanical inspired ceramic making.

By deconstructing and looking at the anatomy of seasonal flora, you’ll be guided through an exploration of pattern making in clay. As part of the session you will learn to make a clay roulette tool and use it to create a beautifully impressed shallow dish.

Come and spend an inspirational evening in the calm and planty surroundings of Tall Boys Beer Market.

What experience do I need and what do I need to bring?

The workshop is a mixed level group and is for everyone. You don’t need to bring anything with you, as all materials that are needed for the session will be provided. A quality selection of craft beers and wine will be available to purchase from the shop on the evening for you to sip on whilst you create.

Please note that dishes and roulettes will need to be fired. These can be collected from Tall Boys Beer Market 28 days after the session.

Tickets sell quickly so book early to avoid disappointment.

Ceramics Taster: Cut Out

Colour fanciers learn how to carve, layer, incise and scratch colourful designs onto and into leatherhard clay. We’ll show you a range of ceramic decorative techniques and processes. Experiment with stencils and wire loop tools to lay whatever design might take your fancy – we tend to go geometric but that’s our thing.

You’ll apply a design to shallow oblong dishes approximately 12cm x 24cm x 3cm.
