Clay: It’s the Good Stuff

potter-marksMake your mark: Clare comes to regular sessions at the studio & is now practicing her throwing. Recently we chatted a bit about sustainability and the responsibilities we have as makers. It’s a tough one. There’s been a lot of talk about plastic recently & there’s always talk about stuff and wether we really need it – particularly on the run up to Christmas. People have formed clay for 20,000 years & a lot of what we know about our past can be learnt through these artefacts. We’re moulded & capacious, it’s moulded & giving: perhaps that’s why so many people connect with it. It records stories: cultural, social, material, social, economic etc… I know I’d rather have something that tells a story, any story. I think making and buying things that asks something of you is affirming. Producing also involves risk. Learning to let go is important. I know I’d rather have opportunities to fail & reflect on my life. There’s plenty of opportunity for that in ceramics. It’s my best friend.

Also… we’ve needed to start using stamps for ages. I’d intended to do this when I first started Sunken Studio but forgot! They’re now more important than ever. There’s a lot of work going through the kiln & these will help optimise loads.

Review – Today at the Hepworth

made-by-today-reviewSearlait McCrea from Today stopped by our stand at the Hepworth Summer Fair and wrote this lovely review:

Sunken Studio’s display at markets and fairs is really one that I DARE you to try pass without stopping. The playful use of pattern and stripped back colour range really makes the products pop. Once you’re in (because like I said, I don’t know how you couldn’t stop for a proper snoop), it’s obvious these wares are the making of a master. The quality of work(wo)manship and obviously extremely considered, yet seemingly simple design is what really draws me to Sunken Studio products.

As well as beautiful handmade homewares and accessories, Sunken Studio run a dizzying amount of workshops, classes and events for both young and not so young people of any ability, so you too can have a go at your own ceramic creations!

What We Did This Summer

tulipiere-multi-spouted-vase

Following on from What We Did Last Summer, here are more multi-spouted vases. They were made in our six week beginner’s courses.

We pared down the brief and removed the requirement for them to be multi-tiered. Last year’s were impressive but simplifying the brief enabled us to focus attention on introductory techniques and do most of the refining and crafting within the workshop.

tulipiere-multi-spouted-vase

These pots took two weeks and covered adjusting press moulded shapes, slab building, tube forming, and shaping and finishing using rasps and kidneys. In six weeks everyone made and glazed an average of 10 pots. If you’d like to be the first to hear when our next courses are published please sign-up to the newsletter.
